Grey’s Anatomy and the Death Card

Posted: March 28, 2010 – 8:52 pm

When people know they’re going to die, they always try and console their loved ones with ‘I’ll always be looking down on you from heaven’. Thing is, that doesn’t really comfort anyone. It only makes things harder to take, especially after the one you love is gone. Derek and Izzie contemplate just what the view from heaven might be from Meredith and Denny’s point of view. MerDer. Dizzie. NOTE: Again, black and white are memories. Normal are generally happening in the present. This video is actually focused more on Denny/Izzie as the death is permanent on that end, but I needed an excuse to use all the beautiful ‘heaven’ type scenes from Some Kind of Miracle. So you MerDer fans get something from me, too.

Blame it on LOST. The ABC show set the precedent of killing a major character every sweeps period and the result was pure ratings gold. LOST managed to dominate every sweeps period by keeping fans guessing which of their most beloved characters would be biting the dust. For a while, the formula rapidly proliferated through other prime time shows, until it nearly became a requirement for a prime time drama, one that pricy lead actors were none-too-fond of.

As you might imagine, like any good side-show attraction, it eventually lost its gravity and became passé. Tension was replaced with groans. NBC’s fledgling serial ‘Heroes’ made it part of its formula from the get-go, managing to draw almost universal scolding from fans and a media that had grown weary of the trick. So why, then was it so successful for Grey’s Anatomy?

February 16th was one of the biggest days in the history of Grey’s Anatomy’s ratings. Grey’s Anatomy played the tired death card and found success never before equaled. What did Grey’s Anatomy do so differently in summoning the reaper that brought it such success? Something which is likely not to be repeated: it killed its lead character.

Killing ‘a’ lead character is one thing, but when you dispatch the character for which your show is named, you invite all sorts of controversy. No, retroactively you wouldn’t expect this to impact the ratings, but Grey’s Anatomy producers and writers are smarter than the average bear. It would seem that Grey’s Anatomy producers created a controlled leak of information that their lead character, Dr. Meredith Grey, was going to bite the dust. This is where the side-show analogy comes full circle.

Grey’s Anatomy fans around the world buzzed that it just wasn’t possible despite the powerful rumors that the Grey’s production staff would even consider killing off the character that the show was named for. It seemed to horrible to be wrong. Heavy hearted Grey’s Anatomy fans everywhere braced for the worst.

In the end, it was Meredith who died, which was in a way one of the biggest payoffs ever of this tired old device. Grey’s Anatomy producers put their necks on the line and pulled off the impossible, they killed their lead star. But there was a catch. They crafted a death for Meredith which left room for a rather obvious resuscitation. Many in the media, fans included, were left to decry the move as one that could have devastating impact on the credibility of the show. A prime example, Buddytv’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy: So, Who Died?’ which decried the death as a shameless gimmick from the get go.

So while the death of Meredith Grey, the namesake of Grey’s Anatomy, was shocking and brought huge ratings, will the subsequent resurrection do the same? More? Or will it repel Grey’s fans tired of being dealt the death card? As of this writing, Grey’s Anatomy is three days away from answering that question, and if the internet buzz is any indication, death is alive and well.

2007 Summer Blockbuster Season Promises Big Screen Bliss

Posted: March 14, 2010 – 8:02 am

Shapes you should use to draw a cartoon mouse including adding detail to make it look more realistic; learn tips, ticks and more for creating realistic cartoon drawings in this free online art lesson about cartoons taught by expert Matt Moskal. Expert: Matt Moskal Bio: Matt Moskal is a free-lance artist with a BA in Elementary / Special Education. Filmmaker: Christopher Rokosz

Summer, as we all know, is the season for movie blockbusters. The summer of 2007 promises to be one of the biggest yet, with several second and third installments of feature film franchises that already have a large following hitting the theaters. From Pirates and Superheroes to animated characters and real life characters who are overly animated, expect a record breaking season that may go down as the highest grossing ever.

Starting things off with a bang is “Spider Man 3”, the Sam Raimi directed prequel to the sixth highest grossing movie of all time, Spiderman. We rejoin the friendly webslinger as he battles a new cache of villains while fighting off the effects of a symbiotic lifeforce that has attached itself to him in the form a new spider-suit.

If superheroes aren’t to your liking, maybe the comedy of Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy in the highly anticipated “Shrek 3” will do the trick. The third film in the series finds Shrek faced with the arduous task of finding someone to fill the recently deceased King of Far, Far Away land’s shoes lest he should have to do it himself. All the main characters from “Shrek 2” return to handle the voicework.

Last years blockbuster, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Black Pearl”, has set sail for new waters. The third and likely last in the series, tagged “Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End”, is scheduled for release on May 25th and features the reunion of Captain Jack Sparrow and his long lost pirate father, played by none other than Keith Richards.

Steven Soderbergh has once again dragged out the A and B-list for another round of Danny Ocean and company hijinks in “Ocean’s 13”. The latest version finds the crew teaming up with casino boss and enemy Andy Garcia for their biggest job yet.

Whether sequel or prequel, nothing this summer has quite the draw (both literally and figuratively) of “The Simpson’s Movie”. “The Simpsons” are the second longest running television show in history, behind only “The Adventures of Ozzy and Harriet”. Creator Matt Groening promises more of what we know and love, but in the context of a well thought out story.

Last, but certainly not least, is the reunion of east meets west for “Rush Hour 3”. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are at it again with a new crime to solve, one which will take them to Paris, among other locations.

Bible Versus Quran Versus Sciences: (8) the Hoopoe

Posted: March 13, 2010 – 10:16 pm

To draw Bart Simpson’s face, draw a rectangular face with large eyes and a tubed-shaped nose. Learn to draw Bart Simpson’s face with tips from a professional illustrator and graphic artist in this free video on drawing. Expert: Jay French Contact: www.JayFrenchStudios.com Bio: Jay French is a lifelong artist with 19 years of experience as a professional illustrator and graphic artist. Filmmaker: Todd Green

One of the inherited doctrines of mankind is that the Quran is quoted or borrowed from the Bible. The Bible says that the Hoopoe is detested and unclean and forbid eating the Hoopoe.

The Quran says that the Hoopoe is intelligent, smart, knows and worships his Creator, and communicated with King Solomon.

Leviticus 11

Unclean and Detested bird:

13 “These are the birds you are to detest and not eat because they are detestable: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, 14 the red kite, any kind of black kite, 15 any kind of raven, 16 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, 18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, 19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

Deuteronomy 14

Unclean Food:

11 You may eat any clean bird. 12 But these you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, 13 the red kite, the black kite, any kind of falcon, 14 any kind of raven, 15 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 16 the little owl, the great owl, the white owl, 17 the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant, 18 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

In the Bible dictionary it is said: “Although the hoopoe bird is only referred to once in the Bible, it is known to be a faithful companion of people all over the world”.

However, the dictionary does not tell that the hoopoe is detested according to Leviticus 11 and also, there is no verse in the Bible which says that is a faithful companion of people all over the world. I bet that the writers of the Bible dictionary have read the Noble Quran and put such an observation about the hoopoe as a faithful companion of people all over the world.

The story of the hoopoe with King Solomon illustrates how faithful, smart was the hoopoe.

Hoopoe in the Quran:

The Hoopoe is mentioned once in the Noble Quran, in Surah 27.

Prophet Solomon was a king whose armies consisted of troops made of men and Jinns and birds. It is possible that the birds were employed for communicating the messages, hunting and for other suitable services.

Detective and Messenger of Prophets

[20] And he took a muster of the Birds; and he said: “Why is it I see not the Hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees?

[21] “I will certainly punish him with a severe penalty, or execute him, unless he brings me a clear reason (for absence).”

[22] But he (the hoopoe) tarried not far: he (came up and) said: “I have compassed (territory) which thou hast not compassed, and I have come to thee from Saba with tidings true.

[23] “I found (there) a woman ruling over them and provided with every requisite; and she has a magnificent throne.

[24] “I found her and her people worshipping the sun besides Allah: Satan has made their deeds seem pleasing to their eyes, and has kept them away from the Path, so they receive no guidance,

[25] “(Kept them away from the Path) that they should not worship Allah, Who brings to light what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what ye hide and what ye reveal.

[26] “Allah! – there is no god but He! – Lord of the Throne supreme!”

[27] (Solomon) said: “Soon shall we see whether thou hast told the truth or lied!

28] “Go thou, with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them: then draw back from them, and (wait to) see what answer they return”…

[29] (The Queen) said: “Ye chiefs! here is – delivered to me – a letter worthy of respect.

[30] “It is from Solomon, and is (as follows): ‘In the name of Allah, Most Gracious Most Merciful:

[31] “`Be ye not arrogant against me, but come to me in submission (to the true Religion).”

The story of how Solomon and the Queen of Saba (Yemen) met: One day Solomon inspected his birds but did not find the Hoopoe. When the bird came back he said, “With truthful news I come to you from Saba, where I found a woman reigning over people and they worship the sun instead of Allah.

Solomon ordered the Hoopoe to return to her and give her a message calling her not to exalt herself above him (Solomon), but come to him in all submission. The Hoopoe did his job perfectly.

In the Qur’an (27:20) we read that Prophet Solomon reviewed his birds and found Hoopoe missing. His most movable arm was the birds, which were light on the wing and flew and saw everything like talented scouts. Prophet Solomon conveys his anger and his yearning to punish Hoopoe severely if he does not present himself before Prophet Solomon with a realistic explanation. Within a short time, the Hoopoe came back and said, “I have got knowledge of things which you have no idea about. I have brought sure information about Saba (Yemen now). There, I have seen a woman ruling over her people: she has been given all sorts of provisions, and she has a wonderful throne. I saw that she and her people prostrate themselves before the sun and worshiped the sun, instead of Allah.!”

Prophet Solomon said, “We shall just now see whether what you say is true, or that you are a liar. Take this letter of mine and cast it before them; then get aside and see what reaction they show.” Qur’an, 27: 27-28.

Here, ends the role of Hoopoe in the story.

In this story, the Noble Quran gives the Hoopoe some characters that need intense research to be elucidated by the scientists. The Hoopoe had the powers of observation, discrimination and expression that it should pass over a country and should come to know that it is the land of Saba, it has such and such a scheme of government, it is ruled by a certain woman, its faith is sun-worship, that it should have worshipped One Lord, Allah instead of having gone off track, and then on its return to Prophet Solomon it should so clearly make a report of all its observations before him.

In spite of great advances in science and technology, man cannot tell with absolute certainty what powers and abilities the different species of animals and their different individuals have got? Man has not so far been able to know through any certain means what different animals know and what they see and hear, and what they feel and think and understand, and know how the mind of each one of them works. Yet, whatever little observation has been made of the life of the different species of animals, it has revealed some of their wonderful abilities. Now, when Allah, Who is the Creator of these animals, tells us that He had taught the speech of the birds to one of His Prophets and blessed him with the ability to speak to them, and the Prophet’s taming and training had so enabled a Hoopoe that it could make certain observations in the foreign lands and could report them to the Prophet, then we should be prepared to revise our little knowledge about the animals in the light of Allah’s statement.

“… We raise to degrees (of wisdom) whom We please: but over all endued with knowledge is One, the All-Knowing.” Surah 12:76

Back to our main issue; one may ask this: Is the Quran quoted from the Bible? And which book precedes the sciences? The book which that the hoopoe is a detested bird or the book which precedes the sciences and says that the hoopoe has the powers of observation, discrimination and expression and it is one of the best detective and messenger?

Hypnotherapy And Nlp: Unscrambling The Link

Posted: March 11, 2010 – 3:13 am

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnotherapy are very closely related and could be considered to come from the same ‘family’ of therapeutic approaches. In fact, if you are considering having hypnotherapy and are currently searching for a therapist, you will probably find that many hypnotherapists now-days, practice NLP to some level and conversely that most NLP practitioners who have completed certified training courses, will also be familiar with using hypnotic techniques during therapy sessions.

How are these therapies similar?

Hypnotherapy utilises hypnotic techniques in order to bring about therapeutic change. Hypnotherapy enables a person to solve personal problems by bringing about a deeply relaxing state of mind. When the person is deeply relaxed this allows the unconscious part of the mind to use its resources to find solutions. It also allows the person to focus their attention completely on the therapists voice in order to follow the positive suggestions and guidance the therapist is making. In hypnotherapy this relaxed state is called trance. All people experience trance states on a daily basis. Trance simply refers to the experience of being really relaxed. It also involves focusing your attention so that it is highly selective. Reading a really good book and being completely absorbed in it, is an example.

Have you had the experience of being totally immersed in the characters of the book, being able to vividly imagine what they are like, whilst at the same time being able to ignore other noises and distractions going on around you? If so, you have experienced trance. Using your imagination and day-dreaming are other examples. Any time that you ‘go inside’ your own head you are in a light trance. If you’ve ever had the experience of having a problem that is constantly with you, so that it feels like all you have or all you are, is this problem, then you will know what it is like to experience a bad trance.

Richard Bandler (a computer scientist) and John Grinder (an associate professor in linguistics) developed NLP in the 1970’s. NLP was created after they spent time studying and modelling therapists who were considered to be extremely effective at getting good results. One of these therapists, was the Psychiatrist Milton Erickson. He was also an extremely talented
How to Draw Video Game Characters-Mario

hypnotherapist. Erikson’s style of indirect hypnotic suggestion and skilled use of ambigous and vague language patterns, has become known as Ericksonian hypnosis. Since NLP was developed after modelling Erickson, many NLP techniques involve Ericksonian hypnotic approaches. Like more traditional hypnotherapy, NLP works with the unconscious part of the mind in order to find solutions to problems. NLP therapists are also trained in using Milton Model language patterns in order to induce light trance states in clients. This is very useful at getting a problem moving when a person is stuck in a bad trance. Other hypnotic techniques that are common to NLP include metaphorical story telling and utilising the client’s imagination in order to bring about a highly focused state of attention during change techniques – a trance state.

How do NLP and Hypnotherapy Differ

You will find that they are more similar then they are different. During hypnotherapy you are much more likely to be seated in a comfy chair, perhaps reclining with your eyes closed! During NLP you often get more involved with the techniques on a practical level, so you may be standing, or be required to do or say certain things related to overcoming your problem. You may still get to close you eyes and you will certainly get to use your imagination. NLP techniques utilise hypnotic elements but usually in a more subtle way, the NLP therapist will empower you to draw on resources you already have in order to bring about new options in thinking.

When you see an NLP therapist you will find they often use more traditional hypnotherapy techniques as well. At the end of your NLP session, after all the hard work, you will often get to recline back in your chair and experience relaxation so that you leave the therapists office feeling positive and ready to go on with your day.

Karen offers NLP and hypnotherapy, Herts and is trained to master practitioner level. Karen is trained to use Milton Model hypnotic techniques during NLP and Hypnotherapy, Herts.

A New Conversation About Dreams: Who’s Directing Your Life?

Posted: March 8, 2010 – 12:59 am

While aspects of you encourage, “Go for your dreams,” simultaneously other parts threaten, “Don’t you dare.” A cast of
characters lives inside of you and at different times you may receive conflicting or contradictory messages. If you are want
to be happy, successful, and fulfilled, consider putting your “dreamer” in the director’s chair.

What are the voices inside of you saying? As you turn the volume up on the voice of your dreamer and down on the voice of your doubter, you can practice discernment allowing for greater clarity. To assist you in hearing these voices, let’s set up a simple scenario. Picture something you want, something that
matters to you. Choose a personal or professional dream and consider how these various parts of you might respond.

Dreamer – The dreamer inside says, “What if…” and is open to a creative process without over-analyzing it. This is the
part of you that imagines, believes in possibilities, has hope, and seeks kindred spirits. Dreamers talk about their ideas with
intention, clarity, and passion. Great dreamers get others excited about their vision. And most importantly, successful dreamers take action to make their dreams a reality.

Doubter – This voice is often heard saying such things as, “I don’t think this is a good idea.” The doubter provides
concern touting, “But what if…” and imagines the worst. If you crank the volume up it can even become annihilating with accusations shouting things like, “Are you out of your mind?”
William Shakespeare said, “Our doubts are traitors.” Carlos Castaneda said, “In order to experience the magic of life, you must banish the doubt.” My favorite quote on this subject is in The Prophet where Kahlil Gibran wrote, “Doubt is a feeling too lonely to know that Faith is its twin brother.”

Realist – “Be realistic…” Modulate the doubter down a notch or two and it becomes the essential voice of the realist.
This part wants to know, “What’s the plan?” including where is the time and money coming from. However, in the early phase of dreaming, you may not know. The challenge is not to allow the realist to immediately turn into a doubter who might judge or obliterate your idea. Honor this voice by (to the best of your
ability) giving it the information it needs. If you ignore or reject it, it will cleverly agitate or distract you. Being realistic offers prudence and makes you do your homework but if
you are overly realistic or go to strategy too soon, you will most likely compromise the dream and kill your passion.

Visionary – This voice says, “Anything is possible so let’s dream big!” These are the leaders and people we look up to
and admire. They have learned the process of realizing their dreams and embody what it means to be a big dreamer. Setbacks or
failures do not stop them. Simply put, a visionary has a vision and invites others to join them. They are found in all walks of
life and we are often so inspired when they are in the presence of a true visionary that we sign up just to be near them or part of what they’re doing.

A visionary is not defined by the size of the dream since dreams are precious and come in all sizes, shapes and areas of life. If
you were living your dream life, how would it be different? What do you see yourself doing? How many lives would you touch? What would you change? Who would you help if you were truly living as a visionary?

Avoid Sabotaging Your Dream

When these different voices merge they can become muddled and result in confusion and poor decisions. For example, you might
poison your dream by projecting doubt into it. Then with each step you take toward what you want, you also move toward your
doubt. Doubt and fear, which most of us may have at some time or another (especially when embarking on a new or big dream) do not
belong in your dream. These feelings are simply part of your reality. This is a subtle and essential point.

Here’s a simple technique for avoiding this sabotaging pattern. On a piece of paper draw a line across the middle. On the top half write out your dream with as much detail as possible. On the bottom write out your reality in relationship to your dream, where you are now. Reality usually includes good news and (so
called) bad, as well as any fear or doubt you may have. Just state the facts and your feelings about them.

Now, which one are you more committed to; your dream or your reality? We tend to choose “reality” when we don’t have a
clearly defined dream or when we saturate our dream with doubt. If your dream is loaded with your worst imagined nightmares, reality will always seem safer and saner. But doubt placed
appropriately as part of your reality, allows two things to happen. First, no longer blown out of proportion, it’s an obstacle that basically requires a strategy to manage it. But
more importantly, with doubt where it rightfully belongs, you are free to move forward.

It’s like a play. All the characters have wisdom and insight, but you can’t clearly understand them when they’re speaking at
once. Take time to tune in, to listen, and on a regular basis, have the courage to give your dreamer its directorial debut or
even the leading role.

Children’s Furniture and Accessories your Kids Will Really Use

Posted: March 7, 2010 – 11:46 pm

It’s frustrating to spend hard-earned income on a toy or accessory for your child’s room and watch it fall from favor in less than a week. In the stores, you may have thought a particular lamp or chair would have been great for your child, but after the toddler loves the gift for five minutes, it’s set aside and never used again. Choosing children’s furniture and accessories for their room that they’ll appreciate isn’t easy, but it can be done. Here are some great ideas for things your kids will love:

Pint-sized picnic tables are perfect accessories for summer days in the back yard. Kids love to have things at their own size, and a table they can use outdoors gives them a small-scale place to have a rest and take a break. Not only that, if you love to have barbecues, your child will have his or her very own place to eat where trying to see over the table or reaching overhead for his or her plate aren’t issues. You can use children’s picnic tables to offer a coloring area for quiet play by placing the picnic table under a tree in the shade.

Rocking chairs are wonderful pieces of furniture to add to a child’s room or to place in an area reserved for reading. The motion of a rocking chair is soothing to all sizes of people, from tall grown-ups to tiny toddlers, and making a rocking chair rock is an easy thing for little kids to do on their own. Placing a pint-sized bookcase with low shelving near your rocking chair is a good idea. Fill it with interesting books to turn the area into the perfect spot for some quiet learning perfect for imagination.

An art activity desk build from solid wood is the perfect accessory for budding artists. While children do draw without table and chairs, using the floor as a hard surface readily, body positioning isn’t ergonomic or comfortable. Try it. Put a piece of paper on the floor, and then attempt a half-hour period of coloring. Feeling cramped when you go to stand? An art activity desk places everything at a good height for children to paint or color at a comfortable position. Choosing a desk offering seating for children as opposed to one with no chair, is easier on little backs and spines and helps avoid long periods of standing.

Wild Planet Spy Gear Spy Video ATV-360

Toy organizers are great additions to a young child’s playroom or bedroom. Children have short attention spans and move rapidly between toys, leaving many of their castoffs lying scattered about. Helping your child learn to pick up is important, and providing a toy organizer with bins at a toddler’s level is a good way to encourage cleaning up after play. Also, children will love the sorting potential that a toy organizer offers. With multiple bins at hand, they can make cleaning up a game by sorting types of toys into different storage bins. Make the job easier by labeling bins with colored squares or pictures – blue is for blocks, red is for crayons, and so on.

When trying to make choices about which things to buy for your child, think over what will have long-lasting value and playtime potential. Fad toys stamped with cartoon characters may fall from favor quickly, so aim for long-term appeal. Plastic items may be budget conscious, but they aren’t durable or solid. Choosing well-crafted and better quality accessories provides years of appreciation for generations to come.

Search Engines vs. SEO Spam: Statistical Methods

Posted: March 3, 2010 – 6:44 pm

High placement in a search engine is critical for the success of any online business. Pages appearing higher in the search engine results to queries relevant to a site’s business will get higher targeted traffic. To get this kind of competitive advantage Internet companies employ various SEO techniques in order to optimize certain factors used by search engines to rank results.

In the best case SEO specialists create relevant well-structured keyword rich pages, which not only please the eyes of a search engine crawler but also have value to the human visitor. Unfortunately it takes months for this strategic approach to produce feasible results, and many search engine optimizers use so-called “black-hat” SEO.

‘Black Hat’ SEO and Search Engine Spam

The oldest and simplest “black SEO” strategy is adding a variety of popular keywords into web pages to make them rank high for popular queries. This behavior is easily detected since generally such pages include unrelated keywords that lack topical focus. With the introduction of the term vector analysis search engine became immune to this sort of manipulation. However “black-hat’ SEO went one step further creating the so-called “doorway’ pages – tightly focused pages consisting of a bunch of keywords relevant to a single topic. In terms of keyword density such pages are able to rank high in search results but never seen by human visitors as they are redirected to the page intended to receive the traffic.

Another trend is the abusing the link popularity based ranking algorithms, such as PageRank with the help of dynamically-generated pages. Such pages receive the minimum guaranteed PageRank and the small endorsements from thousands of these pages are able to produce a sizeable PageRank for the target page. Search engines constantly improve their algorithms trying to minimize the effect of “black-hat”‘ SEO techniques, but SEOs also persistently respond with new more sophisticated and technically advanced tricks so that this process bears a resemblance to an arms race.

“Black-hat” SEO is responsible for the immense amount of search engine spam-pages and links created solely to mislead search engines and boost rankings for client web sites. To weed out the web spam search engines can use statistical methods that allow computing distributions for a variety of page properties. The outlier values in these distributions can be associated with web spam. The ability to identify web spam is extremely valuable to search engine not just because it allows excluding spam pages from their indices but also using them to train more sophisticated machine learning algorithms capable to battle web spam with higher precision.

Using Statistics to Detect Search Engine Spam

An example of an application of statistical methods to detect web spam is presented in the paper “Spam, Damn Spam and Statistics” by Dennis Fetterly, Mark Manasse and Marc Najork from Microsoft. They used two sets of pages downloaded from the Internet. The first set was crawled repeatedly from November 2002 to February 2003 and consisted from 150 million URLs. For each page the researches recorded HTTP status, time of download, document length, number of non-markup words, and a vector indicating the changes in page content between downloads. A sample of this set (751 pages) was inspected manually and 61 spam pages were discovered, or 8.1% of the set with a confidence interval of 1.95% at 95% confidence.

Another set was crawled between July and September 2002 and comprises 429 million pages and 38 million HTTP redirects. For this set the following properties were recorded: URL, URLs of outgoing links; for the HTTP redirects – the source and the target URL. 535 pages were manually inspected and 37 of them were identified as spam (6.9%).

The research concentrates on studying the following properties of web pages:
– URL properties, including length and percentage of non-alphabetical characters (dashes, digits, dots etc.).
– Host name resolutions.
– Linkage properties.
– Content properties.
– Content evolution properties.
– Clustering properties.

URL Properties

Search engine optimizers often use numerous automatically generated pages to massively distribute their low PageRank to a single target page. Since the pages are machine generated we can expect their URLs to look differently from those created by humans. The assumptions are that these URLs are longer and include more non-alphabetical characters such as dashes, slashes or digits. When searching for spam pages we should consider the host component only, not the entire URL down to the page name.

The manual inspection of the 100 longest hostnames had revealed that 80 of them belong to adult site and 11 refer to the financial and credit related sites. Therefore in order to produce a spam identification rule the length property has to be combined with the percentage of non-alphabetical characters. In the given set 0.173% of URLs are at least 45 characters long and contain at least 6 dots, 5 dashes or 10 digits-and the vast majority of these pages appear to be spam. By changing the threshold values we can change the number of pages flagged as spam and the number of false positives.

Host Name Resolutions

One can notice that Google, given a query q, tends to rank a page higher if the host component of the page’s URL contains keywords from q. To utilize this search engine optimizers stuff pages with URLs containing popular keywords and keyphrases and set up DNS servers to resolve these URLs to a single IP. Generally SEOs generate a large number of host names to rank for a wide variety of popular queries.

This behavior can also be relatively easy detected by observing the number of host name resolutions to a single IP. In our set 1,864,807 IP addresses are mapped to only one host name, and 599,632 IPs-to 2 host names. There are also some extreme cases with hundreds of thousands host names mapped to a single IP, and the record-breaking IP referred by 8,967,154 host names.

To flag pages as spam a threshold of 10,000 name resolutions was chosen. About 3.46% of the pages in the Set 2 are served from IP addresses referred by 10,000 and more host names and the manual inspection of this sample proved that with very few exceptions they were spam. Lower threshold (1,000 name resolutions or 7.08% pages in the set) produces an unacceptable amount of false positives.

Linkage Properties

The Web consisting of interlinked pages has a structure of a graph. Therefore in graph terminology the number of outgoing links of a page can be referred to as the out-degree, while the in-degree equals to the number link pointing to a page. By analyzing out- and in-degrees values it is also possible to detect spam pages which would represent the outliers in the corresponding distributions.

In our set for example there are 158,290 pages with out-degree 1301, while according to the overall trend only 1,700 such pages are expected. Overall 0.05% of pages in the Set 2 have out-degrees at least three times more than suggested by the Zipfian distribution, and according to the manual inspection of a cross section, almost all of them are spam.

Similarly the distribution for in-degrees is calculated. For example 369,457 pages have the in-degree of 1001, while according to the trend only 2,000 such pages are expected. Overall, 0.19% of pages in the Set 2 have in-degrees at least three times more common than the Zipfian distribution would suggest, and the majority of them are spam.

Content Properties

Despite the recent measures taken by search engines to diminish the effect of keyword stuffing, this technique is still used by some SEOs who generate pages filled with meaningless keywords to promote their AdSense pages. Quite often such pages are based on a single template and even have the same number of words which makes them especially easy to detect using statistical methods.

For Set 1 the number of non-markup words in each page was recorded, so we can draw the variance of word count in pages downloaded from a given host name. The variance is plotted on the x-axis and the word count is shown on the y-axis, both axes are drawn on a logarithmic scale. Points in the left side of the graph marked with blue represent cases where at list 10 pages from a given host have the same word count. There are 944 such hosts (0.21% of the pages in Set 1). A random sample of 200 these pages was examined manually: 35% were spam, 3.5% contained no text and 41.5% were soft errors (a page with a message indicating that the resource is not currently available, despite the HTTP status code 200 “OK”).

Content Evolution

The natural evolution of the content in the Web is slow. In a period of a week 65% of all pages will not change at all, while only 0.8% will change completely. In contrast many spam SEO web pages generated in response to an HTTP request independent of the requested URL will change completely of every download. Therefore by looking into extreme cases of content mutation we search engines are able to detect web spam.

The outliers represent IPs serving the pages that change completely every week. Set 1 contains 367 such servers with 1,409,353 pages (97.2%). The manual examination of a sample of 106 pages showed that 103 (97.2%) were spam, 2 were soft errors and 1 adult pages counted as a false positive.

Clustering Properties

Automatically generated spam pages tend to look very similar. In fact, as already said above, most of them are based on the same model and have only minor differences (like inserting varying keywords into a template). Pages with such properties can be detected by applying clustering analysis to our samples.

To form clusters of similar pages the ’shingling’ algorithm described by Broder et al. [2] will be used. Figure 7 shows the distribution of the cluster sizes on near duplicate pages in Set 1. The horizontal axis shows the size of the cluster (the number of pages in the near-equivalence class), and the vertical axis shows how many such clusters Set 1 contains.

The outliers can be put into two groups. The first group did not contain any spam pages, pages in this group are more related to the duplicated content issue. In the same time the second group is populated predominantly by spam documents. 15 of 20 largest clusters were spam containing 2,080,112 pages (1.38% of all pages in Set 1)

To Sum Up

The methods described above are the examples of a fairly simple statistical approach to spam detection. The real life algorithms are much more sophisticated and are based on machine learning technologies which allow search engine to detect and battle spam with a relatively high efficiency at an acceptable rate of false positives. Applying the spam detection techniques enables search engine to produce more relevant results and ensures a more fair competition based on the quality of web resources and not on technical tricks.

How To Write A Love Scene

Posted: February 28, 2010 – 8:16 am

The most critical lesson in writing a love scene is that it is similar to making love in the real world: when done well, it is messy, chaotic and somewhat animalistic. The civilized approach does not work; it leads to the greatest drawback of all: predictability.

Does this sound familiar? The leading man and woman dislike one another intensely; something happens and they see another side of the other; in spite of their best efforts to deny it, they find themselves attracted to one another; and they ultimately fall into a passionate embrace. Do you really want to write that one again?

The Best Love Scenes

The best love scenes are the ones in which the participants are not perfect specimens and the circumstances are obscure and somewhat confused. They are the scenes in which the reader has to work for it. In a word, they are authentic.

For example, here is the opening paragraph of my book, Point and Shoot:

This is how you make love to a woman undergoing cancer treatments. You ignore the metallic taste of her kiss; the slight snorting sound she makes when you press into her; the bony feel of her body, covered by skin that lacks tensile strength; the hairless scalp. You close your eyes and remember what it was like before. You move gently, until you forget yourself, as you should. You savor the moment because there might not be many more. And one more thing: you move very gently.

How to Get Started on Your Love Scene

I would suggest that you start by imagining your most interesting and emotionally-moving encounter with the opposite (or the same) sex. Write out a free association narrative about the images; scents; colorings; texture; dialogue; weather; and other aspects that trigger your memory.

Then, complicate it. You must assume that your memory of the event has been neutered by the passage of time. You remember your past, as we all tend to do, in an unrealistic light, obscuring and shading over the petty annoyances (Could you stop that whistling?); the inconvenient bodily functions (I have to pee.); and the wanderings of your mind (Did I lock the car door?) . So instead of writing that simplistic and ultimately, predictable story, shake it up.

Have your female character imagining a former lover, while her words are only about the man in her arms. Have your male character fear that he will not achieve arousal, and keep this truth from his lover until it can no longer be hidden. Have your characters wear blindfolds, so that all of the narrative description is tactile. In other words, create some kind of slanted, asymmetrical aspect to the story. Make your characters, and the reader, work for it.

Sure, Sex Sells, But Don’t Make it Porn

One of the most frequently asked questions is how explicit to make the love scene. The answer is simple: less explicit than what you would want to read.

It is axiomatic that the most sexually-charged organ of the body is the mind. That is where your story will be experienced, and you need to cater to the mind’s unique way of perceiving. The best caricaturists will use nothing more than a curved line or a geometric shape to suggest an instantly recognizable celebrity. They draw the most memorable aspect of the person’s face, for example the ears. By that alone, the viewer can instantly discern the subject’s identity.

Likewise, a writer must suggest rather than explain. Describe how it feels to run a finger along a thigh; to feel blankets bunched between your body and your lover’s; to be out of breath and not really know why. To paraphrase a long-ago Presidential campaign, make it subtle, stupid.

Here is another excerpt from that scene in Point and Shoot which illustrates the point:

“Are you getting there?”
“I told you never to ask me that question. It doesn’t matter. Keep going. Finish.”
“If I’m hurting you.”
“Keep going.”
I sped up. She shifted her hips to make it easier. After a while, I could see a tear well up at the corner of her eye. The tip of her nose flushed. She patted my shoulder again. “I said keep going.”
A wave of remorse and self-pity, a heavy, deadening feeling, yanked me back.
I stopped for good and rolled off her.
She lay there, splayed out, staring at the ceiling. Unmoving.
I propped myself on one elbow, stroking her abdomen.
We were silent for a long while.

Conclusion

To sum up, love scenes are done best when they follow no particular formula, but instead, come from the heart. Less is more. Of course, you should also keep in mind that the research is frequently much more fun than the actual writing. But take a few moments to get it down on paper, anyway. We readers like to watch.

Modern Women and The Perfect Man

Posted: February 27, 2010 – 11:17 am

In this day and age women have their own plans, goals, and careers. With all of these things weighing on her time judging a man suitable has become a short process of determining whether his character is reasonable and pleasing.

Lets place an image in your mind; a woman who has accomplished her short-term goals of a college degree and securing the job of her dreams. Now she is thinking of starting a long-term committed relationship. The process of finding the right man will be done thoroughly, just as she picked the perfect college and job. What would this woman be looking for in a man? That all depends on her values, personality, and her past relationships.

These relationships include romantic as well as those with friends and family. She may look for a man who has been as thorough in choosing his college and career as she was. She may also look for a man who has had similar experiences with his family as she has. These things make the man seem familiar and she is comfortable because of it. Although she may look for a man who is opposite of her; a man who will push and challenge her into experiencing new things in her life.

With all of these options, her choice will be different as all women are. If she finds a man similar to herself she would expect him not to be lazy, to exert strong effort into his goals and life. She would find a man who works hard and does not view quitting as an option. She would be attracted to a man who puts himself first.

Women who look for relationships similar to those of their parents look for specific qualities. If she saw a man and woman completely committed to each other who put loyalty and faith above all she would find a man that could be that for her. She may also have viewed a relationship where the man and woman were comfortable living their own lives and letting each other in by sharing there experiences of the day. There is also the possibility that she viewed a relationship without love and loyalty. If this is so she would be fine with a relationship like this. She would look for a man who is unable to get close and let her in, a man who only shares his life with her by going through the motions.

Other women desire excitement and inspiration. This woman would desire to be pushed in thought and actions. A man suitable for her would be eclectic, always moving from thought to thought, seeming to be anonymous. He would be imaginative, bold, and defiant. It may never be determined what women look for in the perfect man, because she might not have found the perfect characters for her. She might be looking for a man with several or all of the aforementioned qualities. A hard working man with a meticulous character but also tends to be adventurous.

One thing never to be forgotten is that women as well as men look for things that they find attractive the qualities that draw them in. She will look for a man that she finds appealing mentally as well as physically.Women are complicated, mysterious, and very difficult creatures. When men understand that women are a mystery they will be one step closer to figuring out what women want in a man.
